What is reaction time?

Reaction time is the gap between your senses picking up a signal — a colour change on screen, a sound — and your body actually responding, such as pressing a key. The chain runs from the visual signal reaching your visual cortex, to your brain making a decision and issuing a command, to that command travelling down to the muscles in your hand. The whole path usually takes only a few hundred milliseconds, but it varies from person to person and even from moment to moment.

What affects your reaction time

Plenty of things move the number: age (young adults are typically quicker than children and older adults), sleep quality, how focused you are, distractions, stimulants such as caffeine, and athletic training. Even your screen's refresh rate and mouse or touch latency can account for tens of milliseconds. Professionals who depend on split-second responses — esports players, fighters, racing drivers — often train their simple reaction time down below 200 ms.

How the test works

The box starts blue. Click it and it turns red, which means the waiting phase has begun — don't click during this part. After a random delay of 1.5 to 5 seconds it turns green, and the moment you see green you click, which records your reaction time in milliseconds. Clicking while the box is still red counts as a false start and you have to begin again. That rule exists on purpose, to check that you're genuinely reacting to the signal rather than guessing on a fixed rhythm.

How to read your score

Simple visual reaction time for most adults sits somewhere between 200 and 350 ms, with roughly 250 ms as a common midpoint. It's worth running several rounds and looking at your average rather than your single best: any one attempt carries a slice of luck, whether your finger happened to be poised already or your attention drifted for a beat.
